Be A Longevity Expert
/Hello Yogis!
Well! I was listening to an interview with Canadian Physician Dr Peter Attia and I bought his book immediately. The interview is here, on Virgin Radio. Wind forward to 02:50:30. Here are some key points:
Q1. Beware the marginal decade and bring on the bonus decade. Discuss.
"The truth is every one of us will have a last year of your life. What can you do to make it the best possible version of that decade, physically, mentally, emotionally?”
Q2. Training for the last decade of life.
"I want to be able to sit on the floor for 20 minutes with ease and get up on my own power. I want to be able to walk 3 miles/5 km in an hour. I want to be able to get out of a swimming pool without a ladder. I want to be able to put a suitcase in an overhead locker".
Q3. Maintenance is really important
“Once you get to 60 it would take more than a year to put muscle mass on that you would lose with two weeks of inactivity. Continue to be as active as possible so that you don't lose ground”.
Q4. What are the four things that are coming to get us, regardless.
“Everybody understands that smoking will shorten your life. Everybody understands that having type 2 diabetes is going to shortens your life. The amount that they shorten your life is less than the lengthening that comes from being very strong, having high muscle mass and having a great cardiorespiratory fitness”.
Also:
The four biggest killers are heart disease, cancer, neurodegenerative disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (almost exclusively associated with smoking).
Know your family medical history. Is there cancer? Is there diabetes? Splurge money on the tests. Everybody should know their Apo B - the Apo B lipoprotein causes heart disease so everyone should know the number which represents the bad actors in your blood that carry cholesterol into the artery wall.

Yoga In The News
The Guardian has: ‘Puppy yoga’ is on the rise – and as a dog welfare specialist, I’m horrified. ‘Some of the puppies are only six weeks old. By law, they should be with their mothers for at least the first eight weeks of their lives. Instead, according to the investigation, they are being put to work for hours each day in some places, allegedly deprived of water (to prevent urination), woken from sleep (critically important for puppies) and being passed around the people in attendance. The rooms are often overly warm to suit the needs of humans, which is a health risk to puppies.’
The Guardian Letters has: Don’t give up on yoga – it really is for everyone. ‘I think Anita needs to explore village hall yoga. It’s often taught by people who have an enthusiasm for it, backed by knowledge but without all those annoying gimmicks.’
The Times has: I tried the £30-a-month online workout that the A-list swears by. ‘The actress Emma Stone admits to feeling “terror” the first time she tried it. Gwyneth Paltrow says it’s “like ten hours of talking therapy in just one hour”. Drew Barrymore does it sitting tearfully on her carpet, letting out long burps and laughing hysterically. Welcome to The Class, Hollywood’s favourite workout. Designed to unite body and mind and to help to “process emotion”, it’s a cross between a fitness regime and a spiritual experience’.
